Art therapy & families

From a very young age children use art making to express how they feel inside. Children and adults sometimes find it hard to use words especially if they are confused, frustrated, unhappy or scared.

Using art materials with the support of an art therapist can help people to communicate how they are feeling.
Our Art Therapy service can provide you with group and individual art therapy sessions to support children and their families.

The Art Therapy sessions are run by an Art Therapist. They take place at the same time each week. They last for one hour for individual sessions or an hour and a half for group sessions.
We are community based and can run our sessions in schools, community centres, family centres, etc.

During the session the children can experiment and play with different art materials such as crayons, paint, clay and glitter. The Art Therapists can adapt the art sessions so that people of all abilities and needs can make their own art work.

The Therapist is someone who the children can trust and is there to make sure that they feel safe during the sessions. The art room is a private place where children can express how they feel.
Some children find that making the art work alone helps them feel more relaxed or happy, while others like to talk about how they feel or about their art work with the Art Therapist.
The Art Therapist understands that everybody’s art work is personal to them and will not try to tell children what the art work means but together they can try to understand how they are feeling and think about how they can make things better.
