From a very young age, children use art making to express how they feel.
Both children and adults can find it difficult to put into words how they are feeling, especially if they are confused, frustrated, unhappy or frightened.
Disruptive or challenging behaviour or becoming withdrawn or isolated can be a sign of underlying distress.
Art Therapy uses art making as a safe way of helping people to communicate their thoughts and feelings more effectively. It is an excellent way of engaging people who may find it difficult total about or communicate problems, worries or confusing feelings.
When someone presents with a problem, the Art Therapist builds a trusting relationship to help them reach a better understanding of themselves.
Some people find that making the art work is in itself therapeutic. For others, it is a safe way to start to express and talk about how they feel.
The Art Therapist understands that everybody’s art work is personal to them and will not try to tell them what it means but together they can try to understand how that person is feeling and think about how they can bring about change.
Artscape is a not for profit, community based Art Therapy service.
We work with individuals, families and groups within education, health, social services and the voluntary sector.
Sessions are provided weekly or fortnightly in a safe, confidential space.
The Art Therapist can adapt the sessions for people of all abilities and needs.
Art Therapy can especially benefit people affected by:
- emotional and behavioural difficulties
- mental health problems
